Today Illinois Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) announced that the Department of Homeland Security is awarding over $1.1 million to 10 communities across Illinois through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program.

Of the communities the Normal Fire Department was chosen as one of the 10 and will receive $69,091.

That money will be used to give the first-responder organization the ability to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles and training to ensure the safety of both first-responders and the public.

Durbin says the firefighters of the community put themselves in harms way whenever called to action and this is a way to ensure their safety.
