Officials give friendly reminders as boating season draws to a close

Local News

With Labor Day weekend signaling the end of boating season, the Fon du Lac Park District wants to remind everyone of a few life-saving tips while out on the water.

If you are going to be out on the water, tell someone where you will be in case of an emergency. The director of the Fon du Lac Park District also says stay away from alcohol when boating. And, officials say it’s something that not everyone thinks about, but watch out for bigger boats such as barges.

“We get a lot of complaints from the barge operators, as well as the spirit of Peoria that recreational boaters want to get too close. They need to understand that a barge going down the river, it may take up to a mile for him to stop,” said Michael Johnson, director of the Fon du Lac Park District.

No matter how experienced you are with swimming, be sure to wear your life jacket.
