A community is rallying behind a local artist, showing their support for breast cancer survivors.
“When they would tell me their stories, I was able then to work that expression out using their bodies as the canvas,” said McDade. “Many of the models said to me, which was heartwarming, is that I made them feel beautiful again. That was very important to me.”
Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2017, leaving McDade with a passion to help spread awareness and beauty to survivors.
You can see the canvas art, depicting breast cancers survivors bodies. McDade’s work will be available for sale, and she will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Komen Memorial.
“I want them to understand how many people it really touches,” McDade said. “It’s pervasive. I want to raise awareness. Many of the models were very young…just to be aware, be vigilant, check, get your mammograms, and just to raise awareness.”
If buying art isn’t your forte, you can simply make a donation to Komen Memorial at Exhibit A Gallery and you’ll receive a Paint the Heights Pink restaurant card.
“They’re beautiful works of art and we also have the wonderful opportunity to partner with the Susan G. Komen foundation,” said Barb Milaccio, owner Exhibit A Gallery. “It’s also going to be working with local businesses as they’ll be donating a portion of the proceeds from your dining experience.”
Presenting this card at participating restaurants in Peoria Heights will have 10 percent of your purchase also go towards the memorial.
“It’s really exciting,” said Milaccio. “We love supporting Theresa and her work. It’s just a beautiful collaboration between the gallery, Theresa, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the other businesses here in Peoria Heights.”
Here’s a participating list of restaurants on Friday, Sept. 28:
- Cayenne Restaurant
- Joe’s Original House
