PEKIN,Ill.– Pekin City Council hosted a preliminary discussion Monday about how it plans to properly implement the new Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act law for Pekin residents.
Mayor Mark Luft said he wants the community to educate themselves on the law and understand how the city will regulate cannabis. Regardless of the city’s approval, citizens over the age of 21 will still be able to possess it.
“There will not be a dispensary on every corner, out of the gate the state is keeping pretty tight regulations on how many dispensaries there can be and where they can go,” Pekin city attorney Katherine Swise said.
Luft said he will be asking for community feedback over the next several months and hope the council will have a decision made by December. You can Contact Mayor Luft here.
