Pekin District 108 heads back to school

Local News

PEKIN, Ill. — Summertime is officially over for another group of kids in Central Illinois.

Pekin public schools in District 108 — packed their lunches Tuesday morning and headed off to school.

For the 11th year in a row — the Pekin Fire Department was stationed outside schools — like Washington Intermediate — cheering on students as their first day started.

“We started this quite some time ago and we’ve gotten a very good response from District 108. A lot of people seem to pay attention a bit more when we are out and about, and hopefully it’ll let everyone know from now on for the rest of the year that they need to pay attention and slow down,” said Pekin Fire Chief Kurt Nelson.

The department says this is something they hope to do for years to come.
