Officers across the country and right here in our community are a stand against crime. It is part ofthe annual National Night Out Against Crime celebrations.
Peoria law enforcement participate in the National Night Out every year. It is in hopes of building trusting relationships with the community.
“Law enforcement is typically just responding to emergency calls and there’s not a lot of opportunity to just talk to them and get to know them and this is an opportunity to do that,” explained Jennifer Engelbrecht, with the PPD.
This year, 30 neighborhoods and organizations held events, many of them including free food, activities and lots of music.
The Proctor Recreational Center even held a late night movie. Organizers at the Proctor Center say they want to show kids the communites and parks are a safe space to be in.
“Just by saying that you can play in the parks in Peoria Park District and the Proctor Center and everywhere and not worry about something happening,” Jonelle McCould,
Law enforcement hope events like the National Night Out will allow people to be more comfortable reaching out to them when there is a problem.
