Peoria Civic Center event brings millions in for local economy

Local News

The Peoria Civic Center is home to more than 5,000 people as they attend one of the largest conventions that we host.

Markiewicz International is hosting their “Spring Forward Conference” for the fourth year in a row.

“They book out the whole Convention center,” says Michael Freilinger, CEO downtown development corporation. “So they’re renting all of the conference rooms, meeting rooms. Plus in some of the hotels, they’ll be leasing those as well.”

According to the Peoria Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, more than 2,000 hotel rooms have been booked for this conference.

The local economic impact of this conference is a sizable one.

“Anytime you bring that many visitors coming in for the entire weekend,”says Freilinger. “Not only are they using, filling up hotel rooms, but they’re going to be out frequenting restaurants and shops.”

A spokesperson from the Peoria Civic Center Authority says when the convention center expanded 10 years ago these large scale events were the types the city was hoping to attract.

“We are proud and honored for the Peoria Area to host the Markiewicz International Conference which will generate an Estimated Economic Impact of $1.4 million to our area,” said Don Welch, President/CEO of the Peoria Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The strong relationship that we have forged with this client has resulted in four additional similar conferences that will generate a cumulative estimated $11.6 million in Economic Impact.”
