Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell says Friday will be the last day his office will release the Daily Commitment Report.
Asbell made the announcement Wednesday on WMBD This Morning. The report, published online daily, lists adults booked into the Peoria County Jail in the past 24 hours.
Sheriff Asbell says a law going into effect in 2019 prohibits the dissemination of mugshots on low-level misdemeanors. That change would require the Sheriff’s Office to increase manpower time and cost in order to publish the report with those exceptions.
Asbell also says the public’s use of the report has changed since he started it in 2013.
“It was to help alleviate the amount of FOIA requests we received,” says Asbell. “Now, it just seems to be a source of entertainment on social media. I think it’s important to remember and respect that while these people have been arrested, under law they are innocent until proven guilty.”
You’ll still be able to access jail records via Peoria County’s website. If you think a loved one has been booked, you can call the inmate information line at (309) 697-7841.
