PEORIA - Prepare to party into the new year with Peoria's own version of the ball drop.
Even though it was bitterly cold out families braved the weather and had a good time ice skating just before the ball dropped at the PNC Winterfest next to the Peoria Civic Center.
Kids and their parents brought in the new year a few hours early together at the 7 o'clock countdown. People say having a local ball drop helps get them in the holiday spirit.
Marissa Melaga says, "I'm always like, ‘what am I gonna do for New Year's Eve,’ and then I heard about this and I was like, ‘that sounds like a great idea,’ and I like the holiday type of stuff like this, especially the ball drop. I thought it was a really cool thing to have because they've never done that before."
They will have the adult version of the countdown at midnight, with a live band playing just inside where it's warm and then fireworks just after the ball drops to celebrate the new year.
