PEORIA, Ill. - Peoria International Airport (PIA) had its third busiest year on record in 2017.
"We set records during the first three months of the year," says Gene Olson, director of airports. "We had the busiest January, February, and March that we've ever had. March was the busiest month that we've had for any month."
PIA saw 635,003 passengers come through its gates in 2017. That's 10,000 more people than the previous year.
"It's kind of a reflection of the fact that people in Peoria are choosing to fly out of the airport here instead of driving up to Chicago; that's a big factor," says Olson.
And those who come through PIA are very happy with their experience.
"It's a nice little airport, it's convenient and it's easy to get to," says Kathy Tarmann, PIA passenger.
Olson says in order to continue to see growth, he'd like to expand one of his new destination flights.
"What we'd like to see is have Destin, which is a seasonal service now, we'd like to see that get expanded to more of the year," says Olson.
