PEORIA, Ill. — Rachael Parker was appointed county clerk on Thursday, but there is another person seeking the office.

Gabe McLeod, who worked under Steve Sonnemaker for 12 years, says he’s going to announce his candidacy soon.

The county clerk position is up for election in 2020.

McLeod also interviewed for the county clerk position, but was not chosen to replace Sonnemaker.

He says for now, he’s looking forward to supporting Parker in her new role as county clerk.

“I very much look forward to working with her. Providing any assistance that I can give her. Gleaning, learning, anything from her leadership over the next 13 months. We have an incredible staff, incredible office, I think it will be a good transition,” said McLeod.

Peoria County board chairman Andrew Rand appointed Parker to fill the position.

He says that Parker will be a great addition and has a longstanding reputation.

“Rachel’s been on the board for nine years, affable, lovable, she knows everybody in the courthouse. She’s a former school board member, she’s served on the board together with me for the last nine years, and we know her very well,” said Rand.
