PEORIA, Ill. -- Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals is Wednesday night following an intense matchup between the Boston Bruins and the St. Louis Blues.
Whether you're a Bruins fan or a Blues fan, Peoria will come out on top. There's an opportunity for one current Bruins player and four current Blues players who are all former Peoria Rivermen to be added to the Stanley Cup.
"This area and this team has so much history and tradition over the years. We've had nine different players who have ended up going from Peoria to have their name on the Stanley Cup," said Brad Kupiec, broadcaster for the Peoria Rivermen. "Each of the last three years, we had Ian Cole win it with Pittsburgh in '16 and '17. Lars Eller won it with Washington last year, and now no matter what somebody who played for the Rivermen back in the AHL era is going to end up with their name on the Stanley Cup."
Those names include Bruins player David Backes, and Blues players Jordan Bennington, Jake Allen, Alex Pietrangelo and Jayden Schwartz. They all played for the Rivermen back in the AHL era prior to 2013, and are now one game away from having their name on the Stanley cup.
"It's incredible to see, and that's just minor league sports in general. It doesn't matter what sport or what level- you're seeing the stars of tomorrow, today in the Peoria kinds of markets," said Kupiec.
