Willie York, “Peoria’s Most Famous Homeless Person” passed away at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said York had been a resident at Sharon Healthcare before being moved to the OSF Richard Owens Hospice home.
York, who was 74, died of natural causes.
The Peoria icon was the subject of the 2008 short documentary “Street Jesus: The Story of Willie York” available on YouTube. York was known for his outlook on life and his creative face painting, and he had a large impact on the City of Peoria, especially in the downtown area.
