The hours you normally spend sleeping, Jeremy Butler spends patrolling the streets of Normal as an Illinois State University police officer.

“It’s fun, it’s rewarding, I’m able to make a lot of good connections with students, faculty, staff and even just people in the community” said Jeremy Butler.

But that’s not the only uniform he wears. Butler owns and runs Pagoda Rebirth Martial Arts in Bloomington, teaching private martial arts lessons and self defense workshops.

“I fell in love with it like from-  from the day I tried it out. And I never really stopped doing it” said Butler.

Once a week, he volunteers his time at Western Avenue Community Center in Bloomington, teaching kids martial arts. Kids that Jeremy say remind him of his younger self.

“I grew up on the south side of Chicago. I didn’t really have, at one point in time, the finances to be able to teach to train martial arts” said Butler.

So he teaches them – free of charge.

“I wanted to be able to provide that same opportunity for youth in the community who may not be able to afford it” said Butler.

As if he’s not busy enough, he’s also a graduate student at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

“My hope is to graduate with my PHD in Kinesiology by 2020.”

All these areas of his life are elements that assist Officer Butler in achieving his ultimate goal.

“So I wanna do research on less than lethal force training and how officers can improve the quantity and quality of their training through out the country” said Butler.

So what does Officer Butler hope to do after he gets his diploma?

“So my day job would be a professor at a university. So I’d want to do research through a university and then I’d do consulting for police agencies.”

A police officer, an instructor and a student. All the hats Jeremy Butler wears in a day. All with the simple hope of making the world a more peaceful place.

“It’s a marathon it’s not a sprint, is the way look at it” said Butler.

Humble as ever, he credits his wife with his ability to maintain such a hectic schedule.
