MARSHALL COUNTY, Ill. — The preliminary hearing for the man accused of killing, burning, and hiding the remains of Tiffini Murphy has been pushed back.
Edelstein man Gary Berchtold was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of dismembering a human body and one count of a concealed homicidal death on Aug. 24. Remains that are thought to be Murphy’s were found before the charges were filed.
The hearing was moved to 2 p.m. Sept. 9 in the county courthouse. Berchtold is required to appear, or an arrest warrant may be issued on that date.
The defendant moved for a continuance to “review discovery.”
Murphy was last seen in Lacon just over a year ago.
Marshall County authorities were led by a witness to a property on the Marshall-Peoria County Line where the remains were located. The remains — bones and hair — have since been sent off for DNA verification.
