Warm weather is finally here, which means tick and flea season is in full swing. Dr. David Beutel at the All Pets Veterinary Hospital says pets with longer hair or thick fur may be particularly vulnerable to the pesky parasites.

Officials from the health department say ticks and flees hide in brush, tall grass and trees. Ticks can affect both humans and animals, Buetel adds it’s important to put your pets on tick medication.

Self examining pets for ticks after walks on trails or walks in forests is integral in prevention. Many owners are not even aware of ticks on their pets until after a visit to their local veterinarian. Plenty of oral and topical treatments are available at local veterinary offices for tick prevention.
