PEORIA, Ill.,– One person is dead after a fatal head-on collision Saturday night.
Emergency personnel responded to a 911 call shortly at 7:47 p.m. to reports of a wrong way driver on Interstate 74 at the Gale exit.
Judy C. McLeese, 64, of Peoria was pronounced dead at the scene. McLeese was driving a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix , traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes on I-74.
According to Illinois State Police officials on scene of the fatal crash, McLeese collided head on with James F. Estep, 45, of Manassas, Virginia.
Estep was driving a 2009 Fiesta Recreational Vehicle.
“There is one fatality. The occupants of the RV are fine, refused treatment at the scene. But, the driver of the compact car is deceased,” Illinois State Police Sargent Tony Halsey said.
Traffic was shut down and drivers were re-routed to an exit ramp so they could merge back on to the interstate once traffic crosses the overpass.
Eastbound I-74 at Gale Street traffic was re-open at approximately 12:30 Sunday morning.
Why McLeese was traveling the wrong direction is unknown at this time. However, police said there will be no autopsy and her toxicology is pending.
