Peoria, Ill. – Peoria County Clerk Steve Sonnemaker passed away Friday night at 6:43 p.m.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said he was surrounded by friends.

Harwood remembers Sonnemaker as one of the most kind elected officials he had the privilege to work with.

On the Peoria County Facebook page Chief Deputy Mike Deluherywrote, “Steve embodied the values of compassion, humility, and generosity, he will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched and the community to which he was dedicated.”

Sonnemaker has been with the county for nearly four decades, first serving as a county board member.

Sonnemaker was elected to office in November 2006.

He was on the Board of Directors for America’s Gold Star Families, a non-profit providing support for grieving military families, and helped other organizations like Friends of Fatherless Boys, Kiwanis Club and the Salvation Army.

Sonnemaker was also crucial to bringing “The Final Salute” memorial to the courthouse plaza; he served as the chairman of the Peoria County Veteran’s Memorial Committee.

This comes the same week Peoria County lost Board Member Dr. Greg Adamson and State’s Attorney Jerry Brady.

Services for Sonnemaker are being held at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel, which is located at 2021 North University Street, Peoria, IL.
