Stand for Manual supports PPS students

PEORIA, Il - Kids who attend Manual Academy were treated like rock stars with an ovation when the final bell rang.

Civic organizations, non profits, and concerned citizens joined together to show students they are part of the community, and to provide an outlet for anyone seeking help.

“We just hope they hear our words of encouragement and support,” said Beth Derry, Peoria Regional Superintendent.

Derry says she wants students to know that all the adults who showed up, will be a valuable resource throughout their school year and beyond.

“The volunteers that came out today will continue to meet for the course of the school year, to help students dream big,” Derry added.

One of those resources is Bernice Gordon-Young, a psychotherapist at OSF, who believes Peoria is coming together, and the community is invested in education.

“We’re telling students to believe in yourself and if you don't, believe in those who believe in you,” said Gordon Young.  She added, “We want students to place themselves around individuals that want to do great things and who are positive; people who will catch you when they see you're ready to fall.”
