PEORIA, Ill. – On Friday a group of future leaders in the Peoria area celebrated their graduation from the Mayor’s Youth Program.
The program started at the beginning of the summer and has been going on for the last 8-9 years.
The teenagers involved in Mayor Jim Ardis’ program get paid and learn about different skills to benefit them in their future lives.
Mayor Ardis says he is very proud of the students, and says the program helps them to be prepared to go into the job field.
“They had to apply for it, they have to show us their skills and communication. It’s also a program that allows them to see a lot of different potential career opportunities both with the city and with other businesses within the community,” Mayor Ardis said.
“It helps get this information to a lot of the kids in the minority community. There’s a lot of good jobs within the city and hopefully this is just another option they might consider once they get done with school,” Mayor Ardis said.
Many students received certificates for their hard work at the ceremony.
Mayor Ardis hopes one day these teenagers can use the skills they learn and join the job force here in Peoria.
