PEORIA, Ill, (WMBD) – The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Lester Broom was arrested Monday morning and brought up on murder charges.
Officers confirmed the victim, 58-year-old Shirley M. King of Peoria, was pronounced deceased at the scene at 11:32 p.m. Sunday. She was stabbed at Taft Homes.
Autopsy findings showed King suffered a single stab wound to her upper back, injuring vital internal organs and vessels. She had no other injuries. Toxicology is pending, however will not have any bearing on her cause of death.
An officer responded to a 9-1-1 call of someone wanting an ambulance for a person inside of an apartment. Police arrived to find King’s body and Broom, 49, was identified as the suspect.
He had last been seen fleeing from the area northbound on Hancock. He was taken into custody without incident at approximately 3:45 a.m., police said.
Broom was subsequently arrested for First Degree Murder after being taken to the Peoria Police Department. Broom was then transported to the Peoria County Jail.
