11 people taken to area hospitals after I-155 crash

Local News

TAZEWELL COUNTY, Ill. — A crash on I-155 at mile marker 15 near Delavan sent 11 people to nearby hospitals Monday morning.

A truck tractor with a semi-trailer struck the rear of a St. Louis Transportation charter bus at around 10 a.m. Monday. Illinois State Police officials said the truck driver, 39-year-old Daniel Fitzgibbons of Iowa, and 10 of the 29 occupants of the charter bus were transported to various local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Fitzgibbons was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and aggravated use of an electronic communication devise when involved in an accident that results in great bodily harm.

The charter bus was driven by 54-year-old Lawrence Chavis of St. Louis.

First responders and emergency crews from several area agencies were on the scene. An Air-Evac helicopter also arrived, which shut down both northbound lanes.

ISP said the northbound lane remained closed due to the ongoing investigation and debris removal. The southbound lanes remained open.
