Twenty McLean County youth selected to paint an art mural in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Il. – The 2019 Bloomington Youth Mural Project is an art initiative that will give young people the opportunity to express themselves and leave a mark in Bloomington. The mission of this mural project is to empower young individuals and give them a chance to express themselves while beautifying the city with art.

Twenty youth from around McLean County were selected to paint an empty wall by the corner of Market Street and Morris avenue.

The theme of the mural will be geared towards social justice. It’s being led by famous muralist, Joel Bergner, co-founder of Artolution and is also a  Bloomington native.  The artists will work on the project from Monday to Friday and unveil it Sunday, June 9th.

“It’s so important for youth to feel like they have a voice and that’s what projects like these really empower youth to be able to do. They feel that they are important to the community, they feel like they have things to say because sometimes youth feel like they’re not heard,” said Peggy Finnegan-Boyes, curator of education at Illinois Art Station.

The west Bloomington revitalization project, The Illinois Art Station and the city of Bloomington are also collaborating in the project.
