Two indicted for Sunday homicide of pregnant woman

PEORIA, Ill. — A man and woman have been indicted by a grand jury in the death of 24-year-old Peoria woman Jaylin Jenae Williams.

Denise L. Williams faces first-degree murder charges and Montaye L. Phifer faces a charge for possession of a weapon by a felon. The two are next scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Williams was 12-13 weeks pregnant. Harwood said a forensic pathologist estimated the gestation period, and that his office did not file a death certificate for the baby due to the fact the age was less than the age of viability.

Both suspects were arrested Sunday after police were called to West Starr Street on reports of a fight shortly after 12:20 p.m. When Peoria police officers arrived, they found Williams dead from a gunshot wound.

Harwood confirmed the victim died from the gunshot wound after an autopsy on Monday. Her death marked the city’s twentieth homicide of 2019.
