UFS Downtown Outlet Center runs Spanish commercials to attract Latino customers

PEORIA, Ill. — Pierre Serafin, owner of UFS Downtown Outlet Center in Peoria, started releasing Spanish advertisements on the Facebook page early July.

“If you are a retailer and you’re skipping talking to the Spanish customer, you’re losing about 18% of the population,” said Serafin.

Reaching out to the Latino community in Peoria has been a priority for Serafin. He said he tried to reach out to people on his Facebook page years ago, but he had no luck until Cinthia Jaimes became part of the team.

“We are very fortunate to have Cinthia here. She is reaching out to the Spanish, community trying to let them know, one, we exist and we are here to help in any way we can,” said Serafin.

He added that the purpose of this is to help potential customers feel comfortable when they walk through the door.

“If you’re not very good in the English language, then you’re a little shy about going into the store so that commercial in itself allows them to know ‘hey there’s someone I can talk to’,” said Serafin.

It didn’t take that long before they started seeing more Spanish speakers in the store.

“All the time they come in here, It’s like ‘thank goodness, I’m glad someone is here that can help me out and know my language’,” said Jaimes.

Jaimes grew up speaking Spanish at home but never thought she would be able to use it at her job one day.

“When you go out it’s always English and now to come here and be able to speak my language, I feel so good having to help other people. I love helping other people and being able to help my people. It’s really cool.

Serafin hopes other businesses in the area follow his example in reaching the Spanish speaking community in the area.
