UnityPoint Health Pekin Medical Mission will travel to Puerto Rico for this year’s October trip.

For the past six years, a group of nurses, physicians, and auxiliary volunteers travel abroad to offer medical aid to communities in need.

The medical mission trips are about nine days long and they care for an average of 1,600 people while on the trip.

It costs about $45,000 to $50,000 to fund the medical mission trip and medical supply expenses. The Mission raises funds for all trip expenses. Dash at Dusk 5K run on July 13, is their largest fundraising event of the year. The 5K helps cover the majority of the costs. The event will have a one-mile walk for those who aren’t able to run and a Kids Fun Run. “We work out of a mobile clinic and provide basic medical exams, procedures, pharmacy and school supplies. We’re excited to go to Puerto Rico this year. There’s still so much to do for them and we’d like to provide medical aid,” says Cindy Justus, UnityPoint Health – Pekin ER and Urgent Care Nurse Manager. Justus leads the medical mission committee.

Dash at Dusk participants will be able to enjoy a post-race party and a Kids’ Corner offering fun kids activities. For more Dash at Dusk 5k information, click here.
