PEKIN, Ill. – UnityPoint Health announced Tuesday all Labor and Delivery services are being relocated more than a month earlier than anticipated.
In a statement out Tuesday, healthcare leaders say effective Wednesday, July 31, Labor and Delivery services will be moved to the UnityPoint Methodist location in Peoria. Those services in Pekin were initially scheduled to end Sept. 17.
They say more expecting mothers are already driving to Peoria to give birth; an obstetrician is also soon retiring which would create coverage gaps in care.
“We have listened to the Pekin community and worked to create a plan moving forward that best meets the community’s changing healthcare needs. We are introducing new services and welcoming specialty physicians and providers to Pekin. We must provide quality care that is sustainable, and we believe we are making the best decisions possible to be able to provide outstanding care in Pekin for many years to come.”Dr. Keith Knepp, President & CEO, UnityPoint Health – Central Illinois.
Leaders add the Pekin location will still undergo its $8 million project to renovate the main entrance and gift shop to improve patients’ hospital experience.
