PEORIA, Ill. — U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced new legislation on Thursday that would allow the USDA to get an increase in funding by 5% for the next 5 years.

During his visit at the Peoria County Farm Bureau, Durbin emphasized the importance of research and the work the USDA does. The America Grows Act will keep the country competitive in the global marketplace, according to Durbin.

The Peoria Ag Lab is the largest agricultural research center within the USDA, which examines food safety, crop protection and plant diseases.

“When we start opening the door to research, we open the door to opportunity. Whether it’s medicine or agriculture, the Chinese have decided this is a priority for the future of their nation, it should be a priority for America,” said Durbin.

Ag Lab employees are currently researching a new treatment that could help overpower antibiotic resistant bacteria.
