Washington leaders approve tax levy, residents will see increase

Local News

Washington home owners will see an increase in property taxes next year. Monday night the city’s council members approved the increase. Mayor Gary Manier tells WMBD the increase comes after a drastic decrease in taxes back when the community was recovering from the 2013 tornado.

Manier says in 2013 they didn’t want property owners paying a large amount in taxes when they were still rebuilding. In 2019 homeowners taxes will increase by 7.5%. For example, if your tax bill is $1,000 dollars, you’ll see a $4 dollar increase. The Mayor says the decrease in 2013 was needed but now the city is playing catch up,

“We’re still not back to the level we were before the tornado, we’ve just been taking baby steps,” said Manier. “We lowered it by six and a half percent and then two years later we lowered it again because the police pensions were so high.”

The mayor says he believes they’ll be back on track in the next year or so.
