Winter Storm – Snow & Wind Expected Friday Night and Saturday

Local News

Another powerful winter storm is expected to move through Central Illinois from Friday night through Saturday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning which is in effect through 6 pm Saturday. 

Storm Impacts

  • Widespread moderate snow accumulations of 3-6 inches. Locally higher amounts possible. 
  • Strong winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph
  • Significant blowing & drifting snow
  • Power outages possible
  • Dangerously cold temperatures move in Saturday night.

Snow is expected to develop in areas west of the Illinois River between 6 pm and 9 pm and will gradually expand further east through 3 am Saturday. As the storm begins, winds will be blowing from the east-northeast at 5-15 mph but will strengthen to 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph by sunrise Saturday. Throughout the day on Saturday, winds will gust between 30 and 40 mph as they shift to the north-northwest. Blowing snow is expected to significantly impact travel across northern and central portions of Illinois. 

Snowfall Amounts and Timing

There are some differences in the models when it comes to the placement of the heaviest snow. The current thoughts are that there will be two separate focal points of heavier snow, one near the Illinois – Wisconsin border and another with locally higher amounts south of a Macomb to Bloomington line. In between, moderate accumulations of 3-6 inches are expected. 

Peoria Area

  • Forecast Amounts: 3-6 Inches
  • Snow Begins: Between 9 pm and 11 pm on Friday
  • Snow Ends: Between 9 am and Noon on Saturday

Bloomington Area

  • Forecast Amounts: 3-6 Inches (Locally higher amounts south)
  • Snow Begins: Between 10 pm and midnight Friday night
  • Snow Ends: Between 4 pm and 7 pm on Saturday

Pontiac Area

  • Forecast Amounts: 3-6 Inches
  • Snow Begins: Between 7 pm and 10 pm on Friday night
  • Snow Ends: Between 3 pm and 6 pm on Saturday

Canton Area

  • Forecast Amounts: 3-6 Inches
  • Snow Begins: Between 9 pm and 11 pm on Friday
  • Snow Ends: Snow Ends: Between Noon and 3 pm on Saturday

Beardstown Area

  • Forecast Amounts: 3-6 Inches (Locally higher amounts possible)
  • Snow Begins: Between 8 pm and 11 pm on Friday
  • Snow Ends: Between 3 pm and 6 pm on Saturday

Galesburg Area

  • Forecast Amounts: 3-6 Inches
  • Snow Begins: Between 8 pm and 10 pm on Friday
  • Snow Ends: Between 7 am and 10 am on Saturday

Kewanee Area

  • Forecast Amounts: 3-6 Inches
  • Snow Begins: Between 7 pm and 10 pm on Friday
  • Snow Ends: Between 7 am and 10 am on Saturday
