NORMAL, Ill. — A McLean County Grand Jury indicted a woman on Wednesday for the death of an 8-year-old child in Normal.

Cynthia Marie Baker, also known as Cynthia Marie Clay, 41, was indicted for three counts of murder, one count of aggravated battery of a child and one count of aggravated domestic battery. The child was transported from Normal to a Peoria hospital for advanced medical care on Jan. 25 and died the following day.

The indictments allege Clay is responsible for the child’s death and that the victim was a family or household member.

The Normal Chief of Police Rick Bleichner and States Attorney Don Knapp said Clay allegedly kicked the victim in the abdomen, resulting in peritonitis due to intestinal perforation from blunt force trauma, with the intent to do “great bodily harm.”

A subsequent arrest warrant was issued for Clay. She could face between 69 and 217 years in prison.

The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Normal Police Detective Joe Gossmeyer at (309) 454-9614 or McLean County Crime Stoppers at (309) 828-1111.
