PEORIA, Ill. — Northwoods Mall is hoping to start a new summer tradition with it’s first backyard barbecue contest.
Saturday was the mall’s first official cook off where 17 local backyard cookers came out and laid it all on the grill.
The event coordinator, Lyle Cunningham, said he was happy with the turn out as they didn’t really expect it because of the lack of advertisement.
Cunningham also mentioned after years of coordinating cook offs, this one was one for the books.
“I’ve done this for a long time and there is some really really good looking meat. And I’ve had the opportunity to taste some and it’s some really good tasting meat too,” said Cunningham.
“So hopefully next year it’ll be twice as big as it is now and we welcome to have everyone come out, watch the cookers and take a look at what they’ve got going on.”
Cunningham said above everything this is just a nice event for Peoria and local grillers to enjoy.
He said he hopes this will be an event Peoria continues to put on for year to come.
