Woman dies in Pekin after being hit by car

PEKIN, Ill. — A local woman died Saturday night after being struck by a car in Pekin.

The accident happened at 9:07 p.m. on N 16th Street and Willow Street. Officers responded to a call of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. According to police, the car was westbound on Willow street when the person was hit.

The person, identified later as 55-year-old Jennifer Shindledecker of Pekin, was hit by a vehicle being driven by a 16-year-old girl, also of Pekin.

Distracted driving was determined not to be a factor, public information officer Billie Ingles said. The 16-year-old was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Pekin Police Investigations and the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident. The investigation is still ongoing.
