ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Governor J.B. Pritzker’s property tax breaks on his second Gold Coast mansion worth more than $331,000 are the subject of a federal investigation, according to a report from WBEZ citing an unnamed source. 

In October, a report from the Cook County inspector general found Pritzker and his wife, M.K., engaged in a “scheme to defraud taxpayers” by removing toilets from their mansion to declare it “uninhabitable.” Republican members of Congress wrote a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s office asking prosecutors to open an investigation for “fraud and perjury.” 

Former Republican Governor Bruce Rauner pounced on the October report and warned voters that his Democratic opponent could become the next Illinois governor to go to jail. Pritzker shot it down as nothing more than cheap political attacks and proceeded to win a blowout victory in November. 

At an unrelated press conference in Chicago on Wednesday morning, Pritzker told reporters that he’s “confident that any review of this matter will show that all the rules were followed.”
