Washington Police and the Tazewell county coroner are investigating the death of a woman found just steps from the Washington police department.

Emergency crews got to the entrance of the bike path on Jefferson Street around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon.

The Tazewell County coroner tells us somebody was walking down this path when they saw the body off to the side and called police.

The Washington police department says the body is that of a 37-year-old woman, the coroner says she was found in a steep ditch off to the side of the bike path, making it tough for fire fighters and paramedics to bring the woman out.

“There’s a, it looks like a little area where maybe there’s some partying down there, it’s kind of an overlook, sanitary drain type of place but it’s very over grown and extremely steep,” said Tazewell County Coroner, James Baldi.

Washington police say violence does not appear to be a factor leading up to the death.
