From block to bag, it’s all cheese all the time for Greg Umland. As the co-owner of Umland’s Pure Dry in Carlock, he and his small but mighty team vacuum-dry pounds of cheese into crunchy snacks.
“It’s pure cheese. There’s no preservatives. There’s no flavoring. There’s no flour. It’s just cheese.” Umland said. “This is a Cheeto on steroids or something.”
With 30 years of food industry knowledge, Umland started his business two years ago. He works alongside his two sons and a neighbor. But he says his entrepreneurial role stemmed from a business partnership that never quite panned out.
“We were going to custom manufacture for him. He hit some financial difficulties and we had to come up with our own label, our own brand just to keep going and pay the bills when he bowed out.” he stated.
With two years in, Umland says trial and error has led to learning experiences along the way. But the process has served them well.
He stated, “Our first year sales were okay but this year our first quarter surpassed last year’s sales.”
Umland is hoping to continue to grow and expand all while introducing others to cheesy goodness.
“It’s always fun when someone comes up and says ‘Aww this is good! Have you had this? This is delicious!” he said.
