Minonk shop serving up sugar, tradition for customers

Open For Business

From candy to baked goods to other sweet treats, one Central Illinois business is serving up the sugar.

“There’s a lot of sugar in here–a lot of sugar,” Fran Allen laughed.

She and her husband, Fred are now the owners of The Sweet Shop in Minonk. The couple decided to buy the business back in 2017 when the store, formerly known as Pop’s, went up for sale.

Allen said, “I kept thinking about it and I thought ‘I’ve got a little bit of retirement. I’m going to invest it in something I like.’”

Seven days a week, you’ll find the staff mixing, baking, pouring and stocking the treats of the day.

“We have candy cigarettes. We have a lot of people that come in and say ‘Oh my god. I haven’t had those in years,’” said Allen.

The Sweet Shop shelves are lined with retro memorabilia handed down from owner to owner. They include original I Love Lucy dolls, wooden tricycles, old toys, and a host of Coke collectibles, letting customers take a step back in time.

For the Minonk native, the store is doing more than just serving up a sugar rush to customers. Allen says it’s a hometown experience she’s happy to be a part of.

“This is more than a job. It’s something that I always wanted to do and I enjoy doing it,” she said.
