Nurse turned entrepreneur opens Bloomington business

Open For Business

For Minonk native Donny Bounds, 2018 was a big year.

“I recently just hit a milestone birthday of 50 and decided that the next 50 years, I was going to do something a little different,” he said.

After working as a nurse and in the healthcare field for 30 years, Bounds added business owner to his resume back in December: That’s when he opened Donny B’s Gourmet Popcorn in Bloomington.

“All of our popcorn starts at 100 percent real cheese. So we melt that cheese down, mix it with some vegetable oil, and from there that’s our base,” he said.

Then Bounds, his formally trained chef and the rest of his team can add any combination of 75 seasonings, caramels and colors. Some of the most unique flavors include banana, loaded baked potato and dill pickle.

“Everybody loves popcorn so you can’t get tired of it.”

From kernel, to vat, to bag, the whole process takes about an hour to make happen. But Bounds says he doesn’t get tired of any of it.

“My goal has always been just do it. You know and if you can’t stop thinking about it then don’t stop working towards it.

Bounds is in the process of franchising his business across Central Illinois.
