PEKIN, Ill.– Kali Holt is changing the Central Illinois fashion game, one outfit at a time.
“I would go to so many places. Plus-size clothes was such an afterthought for everybody,” Holt, who identifies as plus-size, said. “It was outdated, the styles didn’t fit right and it would make me feel terrible.”
Holt said her frustrations grew even more when she was shopping while pregnant.
“Plus-size maternity clothes was so hard to find. So after a bad shopping trip I just realized that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to be the change I wanted to see.”
So after a year of research, Holt launched Pekin’s Curvy Chic Boutique in July. It’s a body-positive clothing store and safe haven where curvy women can feel like they belong.
“They are beautiful just the way that they are. That they don’t need to change,” she said.
The new venture allowed Holt to have the flexibility of controlling her own schedule and spend more time with her newborn baby.
The community’s response to Curvy Chic Boutique has been an outpouring of gratitude and support. Holt says it has also given her an avenue to reflect on her own growth.
“It’s given me a lot of confidence in myself. Like I see that I was so afraid when I started this journey, to see how far I’ve gone and the impact I’ve made already,” said Holt.
Her message is clear and one that she’s hoping will spread to anyone who steps through her doors.
She said, “Not everyone is the same and that’s what makes us beautiful.”
Holt hopes to one day open other Curvy Chic Boutique stores. She also has hopes of designing her own clothes for curvy women in the future.
The official grand opening event for Curvy Chic Boutique is Saturday. For more information, visit the store’s Facebook page.
