Bennyhoff Cherishes New Status as Season Opens

NORMAL, Ill. — Season openers are always special.

But Saturday’s Illinois State opener will be extra special for sophomore Luke Bennyhoff who was given a surprise scholarship earlier this month. He was a recruited walk-on out of Dunlap last year but has earned a scholarship with his play on special teams.

“It’s going to be something special, I’m still going to go out there with a chip on my shoulder,” Bennyhoff said of his first game as a scholarship player. “That’s not going to change. But knowing I’m out there getting (a scholarship), it’s going to make me go even harder now. I’m out there for a reason now. It’s going to make me more energetic, more excited to be out there now. Ready to go and prove myself.”

The Redbirds open the season at Northern Illinois Saturday night.
