Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins and former saves leader Lee Smith headline the class of former Cubs and Cardinals taking the field for the Normal CornBelters Legends Game Saturday.
Former big leaguers Mike Timlin, Rick Ankiel and Bill Buckner were among the players greeting fans on both sides of the rivalry at a reception Friday night at the Corn Crib.
Timlin, a former Cardinals reliever, said the rivalry is at its best when both teams are fighting for playoff spots, like this summer. “It’s a storied rivalry. It’s probably not as harsh as the one that I ended my career with, with the Red Sox and the Yankees,” Timlin said. “But they definitely have their times where there’s some bad blood going on.”
The Cubs and Cardinals teams face off Saturday at 6:35. Tickets are $15. Fans should keep an eye out for WMBD Sports Director Kurt Pegler, who will play on the Cardinals side.
