Dunlap has been the best girls track team in central Illinois all season long.
This week, the Eagles try and become the best in the state.
Dunlap is sending 24 athletes to the state track and field meet in Charleston with the hopes of winning the school’s first track state title.
“I knew it was going to be a strong season, I knew we had new people coming in, that this year we’d have a lot of new talent,” said senior Lizzie McClain, who will run on three relays at state. “But I did not know we were going to be this strong. It’s so great to see how we’ve all come together as a team.”
Dunlap dominated the Mid-Illini Conference and Macomb sectional track meets earlier in the month.
“It’s one of our goals, it’s the goal of the year,” said senior Meghan Georgieff. “In the past, it’s been conference, sectionals. This year we’ve been focused on a state trophy.”
The Eagles won six titles at the sectional meet last week.
“Every event we have a girl that can perform and that’s not something a lot of teams can say,” said senior Emilie Olmsted. “That’s pretty hard to find. We have a pretty big team, it’s not huge.”
