PEORIA, Ill. — Notre Dame might be the best soccer team in Illinois.
And the Irish could be one of the best in the country. PND, last year’s state runner-up, is in the top ten in two national preseason high school soccer polls.
“I told the guys, the polls are nice. It’s humbling to be recognized with some of the best teams in the country,” said PND head coach Mike Bare. ” But we haven’t won a game yet and I tell these guys all the time, none of them have won a state championship. So they have a lot to prove this year.”
The Irish are ranked fifth nationally in the Top Drawer Soccer poll and tenth by USA Today.
“Even though it’s really cool, we try and stay away from that because we don’t want to be too big in our heads,” said senior midfielder Brody Seaton. “We know we have a long way to go to reach our goal.”
The Irish open the season at home Aug. 26 against Quincy Notre Dame.
“It really doesn’t matter that much,” senior Goal keeper Lucas Fontana said of the national rankings. “We are only focused on winning every game, playing one game at a time and getting that state championship.”
