Illini Move Closer to Opener

Sports

The Illini players feel the buzz but now they want to play.

After six months of hearing about new coach Lovie Smith, the players are ready to play for their new coach. They finally get the chance Saturday when Illinois opens the season at home against Murray State.

“Everyone is hyped, everyone is ready to go for this first game. We have record numbers of season ticket holders,” senior defensive end Dawuane Smith. ‘It’s been great around campus.”

Smith, the former Chicago Bears head coach, was hired to take over the Illini program in March.
