Bartonville, Illinois - Limestone basketball and baseball coach Eddie Mathews and his family had their lives turned upside down April 6th. There was a fire at the house they live in just outside of Bartonville. Thankfully, everyone got out of the house safe. Derek Renz, the head baseball coach at Limestone, immediately called the community to action the next morning.
"I informed the players of everything that was going on and I told them that this is what we were going to do, try and get some immediate relief as fast as we could," Renz said. "So the GoFundMe process was just something really, really simple."
After just two days, the GoFundMe page that Renz created raised over $20,000 to support the Mathews family. You can support the Mathews family here by clicking on this link. Limestone junior Mike Dunne plays basketball and baseball under coach Mathews. He loves how much the community has stepped up to help.
"God gives his toughest battles to his toughest warriors, therefore coach Mathews is his toughest warrior. He is a tough guy, he's been through a lot," Dunne said. "And hopefully everything is going to be alright with him. It really shows how much this community cares about Limestone Community High School and another persons well-being."
With the help of the community, the Mathews family has found a home to live in for the time being. Renz says its now all about the healing process.
"Understanding that life can be short and it is very fragile and understanding that things in fact are just things and nobody was hurt," Renz said. "So we're all going to get by, coach Mathews is going to get by and he's got a very strong support system."
Along with the GoFundMe initiative, there are other ways to support the Mathews family. Renz is collecting gift cards to give to the family. For those interested, you can send an inquiry/information to coach Renz at his email (email@example.com).
