Area Wrestlers Ready For First Trips To State

Marquis Cox knows what’s it like to win a state football championship.

The Peoria High School senior will get his first taste of the state wrestling tournament this week. Cox, a Northern Illinois-bound offensive lineman, is a heavyweight.

“It correlates a lot,” Cox said of being a football player and wrestler. “You have to be low, it’s kinda like all the stuff for football can come into wrestling. A shot is a tackle in football.”

Monte Gregory weighs nearly 200 pounds less than Cox. But the El Paso-Gridley junior is also making his first trip to the state meet in Champaign.

“That atmosphere there is bigger so there’s a few more nerves,” Gregory said of the championships that are hosted by the University of Illinois. “But I think I’ll do alright.”

The state meet runs Thursday through Sunday at the State Farm Center.
