Perhaps it’s only fitting Zach Zehr’s first game as Tremont head coach comes against the Turks biggest rival, Deer Creek-Mackinaw.
It also comes against his alma mater.
Zehr, who won a state championship coaching Arcola in 2015, is one week away from coaching his first game in Tremont. He played at Dee-Mack.
“I think there’s this feeling that we can get out there and get things done,” said senior Andy Sommer. “And we can have a decent team this year under Coach Zehr.”
The Turks, who’ve missed the playoffs in seven of the past ten seasons, are coming off a three-win campaign. Dee-Mack won the Class 2A state title last fall.
“I can’t tell you what it is but people are getting more excited about it,” said senior Caleb Schwenk. “We got a few more kids that weren’t coming out for football. I guess we just needed a new, fresh start to roll over.”
Kickoff for Friday night’s season opener is slated for 7 p.m.
