Chris Friend is playing a waiting game right now.
He’s playing football but has his mind on graduation in two months.
“It’s hard for me to go between the two,” said Friend, a linebacker at Eureka College. “Playing right now and moving along these next few months and figuring out what the next step in my life is.”
The next step in his life might be in the weight room..
When he’s not training for football, Chris works alongside his brother Matt, Eureka’s strength and condition coach, training other athletes on campus. He says it’s helped him realize his dream job.
“Once he became the strength coach here,” Friend said of his older brother. “It clicked with me that I want to do that.”
For the last year he has voluntarily helped train student-athletes at Eureka. He wants the experience.
“He’s wired for strength and conditioning,” said Eureka football coach Kurt barth. “Very intense, very hardworking. He’s outstanding in the classroom, very good taking care of himself, very active.”
He’s given up his last two summers to be a part of intense internships with the sports performance programs at Mississippi State University.
“I don’t want to tell my professors this,” Friend quipped. “But I’ve gained just as much knowledge the past two summers learning from the five full-time strength coaches at Mississippi State, than I have in the classroom, honestly.”
That’s why he’s waiting for graduation in the weight room.
