Four men and three teams comprise the induction class of 2017 announced by the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame Thursday.
Don Millard, a Pekin High School grad who won a pair of NCAA wrestling national titles in the 1960’s, headlines the class. Bergan High School grad Tom Gilles, who pitched his way to the majors with the Toronto Blue Jays is also in the class.
Girls basketball coach John Gross, who has won over 700 games and took two schools to state title appearances, was also voted into the hall by the 25-member GPSHOF board. The hall of fame, which celebrates the achievments of sports figures on the Tri-County area is located inside the Peoria Civic Center.
Former Oakland A’s, Oakland Raiders and Golden State Warriors radio announcer was voted in through the GPSHOF veteran’s committee.
The 1998 Illinois Central College national softball champs, the 1991-92 Peoria Richwoods state runner-up basketball team and the state trophy-winning 1978-79 Spalding girls golf teams are team entries into the hall of fame.
The induction dinner is April 7 at the Peoria Civic Center. For more information log onto www.gpshof.com.
