EAST PEORIA, Ill. — Coming off a 25 win season and losing only one senior, the Illini Bluffs girls basketball team is working hard this summer to improve off of last season.
“Our kids that have been, back when they were freshman, have all been playing together are all now seniors,” said Tigers head coach Jim Robertson. “So we got four seniors and a great core group working around those guys. So a lot of momentum going into the season.”
Seniors such as Hannah Alvey and Hanna Hicks have been on the varsity team for the Tigers since their freshman years, and are using the summer to focus on their basketball goals.
“We’ve been playing up on varsity since freshman year due to the low numbers, and we just kept getting better and better every single year,” said Alvey. “I’m really excited for what’s to come this year.”
The Tigers are hoping to improve from a narrow three point loss in a sectional championship to eventual state finalist Lewistown. They are using that as motivation.
“Yeah, I mean that is a lot of motivation right there,” said Hicks. “That just showed us how much we could do and then now we want to more than what we did last year.”
The IB softball team just made it to state and that is the goal for the girls hoops team. The Tigers hope that momentum will carry into the upcoming school year.
“One momentum is going to carry into the next,” said Robertson. “We expect to have a good volleyball season and that hopefully carries into basketball and again next year for softball. So momentum for Illini Bluffs is great.”
